Shelby Drive and Tchulahoma Road Intersection Improvements

Memphis, Tennessee

The intersection improvements at E. Shelby Drive and Tchulahoma Road were developed to enhance pedestrian safety and improve mobility at one of the busiest intersections in the Oakhaven community of Memphis, Tennessee. With both roadways consisting of seven lanes and carrying high traffic volumes, the project focused on creating a safer and more accessible crossing environment for pedestrians while improving the overall character of the corridor.

As part of a broader community enhancement initiative, the project incorporated gateway features designed to establish a distinctive identity for the Oakhaven area. Proposed improvements included gateway signage, decorative banners, specialty paving, landscaped island bump-outs, enhanced pedestrian crossings, signalization upgrades, and drainage improvements. Together, these elements transformed the intersection into a safer, more welcoming, and visually appealing community gateway.

Fisher Arnold partnered with the City of Memphis, community stakeholders, and the Accelerate Memphis Program to develop a comprehensive plan that balanced transportation, safety, and placemaking objectives. Services provided by Fisher Arnold included surveying, master planning, landscape architecture, signalization design, and roadway engineering.
