Fisher Arnold performed a large boundary survey of a portion of Naval Support Activity Mid-South inMillington, TN, a base of the United States Navy. The boundary survey was prepared for the MillingtonIndustrial Board. The project consisted of 10.23 miles of boundary line. Using total stations and GPS the land consisted of a combination of woods, fields, row crops, pasture, and industrial areas. The project was challenging not only due to the mixed terrain, but also due to the fact that Millington Naval Support Activity Mid-South is an operating, secure United States Navy facility with more than 7,500 military, civilian and contract personnel assigned or working to the base. Significant portions of the land that required surveying are still owned by the Navy and therefore subject to strict security controls and measures. In order to overcome this issue, constant contact and advance direct coordination and scheduling with the bases’Military Police was integral to the success of the project.
