Located at the intersection of Jackson Avenue and Watkins Street in Memphis, Tennessee, this project addresses a historically complex and hazardous intersection where five roadways converge, including one approach along a curve that limits visibility and increases safety concerns.
In collaboration with the City of Memphis, a solution was developed to improve traffic safety by closing one of the converging roadways. This strategic modification not only streamlined vehicular movement but also created an opportunity to repurpose the former right-of-way into a meaningful public amenity.
Concept plans transformed the closed roadway into a linear park designed to enhance the surrounding community. Proposed features include public art installations, a small playground, seating areas, decorative banners, and thoughtfully designed landscaping. Together, these elements create a welcoming space that improves both safety and quality of life while strengthening the identity of the intersection.
