The City of Columbia, Tennessee, working with a grant from the Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT), sought to redevelop its downtown area around the county courthouse and create a connection to the Duck River, a prominent natural feature of the downtown district. Fisher Arnold developed the master plan for this project by conducting several meetings with community organizations, including the Historic Society, the Audubon Society, and the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation (TDEC). This master plan facilitated the transition between the built urban environment and the natural setting along the Duck River.
Environmental sensitivity was extremely important when working along the riverbanks, and special care was taken to protect the endangered aquatic species within the river. In conjunction with the development of the master plan, Fisher Arnold prepared the environmental studies and reports, developed the construction documents needed to complete the greenway, and provided construction administration services for the City.
